PDF + MP3 (digital sound) + MP3 Interpreted + Video - Cello solo - Baroque. License: Public Domain - The Prelude, mainly consisting of arpeggiated chords, is probably the best known movement from the entire set of suites and is regularly heard on television and in films. The second Minuet is one of only twelve movements in all six suites that doesn't contain chords other than in the last.

Bach Cello Suites Score
In a world full of brilliantly played, deeply felt, and highly individualistic recorded performances of Bach's six cello suites by stellar cellists from Casals through Rostropovich to Ma, there is sadly little to recommend this 2009 re-release of Nikolaus Harnoncourt's 1965 version. Harnoncourt's readings are capably played, superficially interpreted, and fairly faceless. Harnoncourt sounds like he barely had the technique to play the works. There are no conspicuous mistakes, merely dutiful performances that start at the beginning and go through to the end without serious errors in between, but there are no virtuoso fireworks. Harnoncourt seems to have nothing particular to say about the music, either; the Prelude to the G major Suite sounds like he's playing with a metronome, the Sarabande in the D minor Suite sounds like he's waiting for a bus, the Bourées from the C major Suite sound like he's just waiting for them to end, and the whole of the C minor Suite -- one of the great 'dark night of the soul' pieces, which in a great performance can leave the listener shaken -- comes off in Harnoncourt's account entirely lacking in subtlety, nuance, and emotional impact. Since virtually every other recording of these works is vastly better than this one, it's difficult to understand why it was reissued, or who, aside from totally devoted Harnoncourt fans, would be interested in it. The sound quality could best be described as functional: there seems to be one microphone placed fairly close to the instrument in a medium-sized empty room.
